Peterbilt Motors Company announces an increase in production of the new Model 587 at the Peterbilt truck manufacturing facility in Denton, TX. The new Model 587 is an EPA Smartway® certified vehicle offering exceptional quality, reliability and performance.
“The launch of the Model 587 is an exciting opportunity for Peterbilt and has generated a high level of interest with carriers seeking fuel economy gains and improved handling for their drivers,” says Bill Jackson, Peterbilt general manager and PACCAR vice president. “In fact, the Model 587 has gained great acceptance in the marketplace resulting in an order for 1,000 Model 587’s for U.S. Xpress. Since the introduction in the fourth quarter of 2010, strong demand for this exciting product has required Peterbilt to double the daily build rate for the Model 587.”
The Model 587 is equipped with standard front air disc brakes providing exceptional performance in stopping distance, brake handling and ease of maintenance. Newly designed steering geometry offers improved curb-to-curb maneuverability by 12 percent. In addition, an innovative forward lighting system enhances visibility by more consistently distributing down-road light coverage by 35 percent.
The Model 587 is available with two sleepers or in a day cab configuration, making it ideal for long-haul fleets, driving teams or owner-operators who seek quality, performance, value and style. The day cab captures the exceptional fuel efficiency and aerodynamic styling of the Model 587 and transforms into a day cab configuration for tanker and regional haul applications. The cab interior has swivel seats, dual arm rests and a roomy 30-inch walk-through space providing a comfortable work and living environment for the operator. The dash layout features stylish colors and textures while gauges and switches are positioned within easy reach to provide an ergonomic work environment.
The Model 587 is standard with the 2010 PACCAR MX engine with 380-485 horsepower range. The engine utilizes fractured cap technology in both the connecting rods and main bearing caps to provide high shearing strength that result in a wide horsepower range and longer torque and power curves for more efficient operation. The fully integrated systems with modular components reduce design complexity resulting in longer service intervals, increased uptime, lower operating costs and higher resale value.
The Model 587 comes standard with premium interior featuring the Peterbilt’s new SmartNav™ system providing integrated mobile computing, telematics, navigation and truck monitoring for drivers out on the road.
